Trading Tennis Before The First Serve

granollers vs delbonis odds variation

Marcel Granollers vs Federico Delbonis odds variation before the start of the match.

I managed to perform an usual trade yesterday on an ATP Gstaad market. Hamburg revelation Federico Delbonis was taking on Spanish clay specialist Marcel Granollers for a place in the Credit Agricole Open quarter-finals.
By the time I checked this market I noticed that Delbonis is priced just around evens and I saw that his odds where already on the contracting path, so I decided to go with the flow and and back the young Argentine. He was inches away from winning last week’s clay court event in Hamburg. The Gstaad tournament is played at a high altitude of 800 meters, thus favoring the big serves. With the 1.90m tall Argentine in the shape of his life, against and average Granollers I had my explanation of why the market was moving the odds in the favor of the Argentine and most probably would continue to do so.

I did use moderate stakes, because I do not often open a position before the start of the match in an attempt to hedge until the event goes in-play. However, when I checked the market little before the start time odds for Delbonis contracted heavily. Initially I intended to leave the position open and go with it in-play, but being 20 ticks on the green side of the trade was to good not to hedge.

And boy what an inspired decision that was. I layed Delbonis and hedged seconds before the first serve was actually fired. It was almost time to go offline, as I had around 15 more minutes and decided how the first games play out. Granollers broke the opening game and wen’t for a 2-0 lead after holding his serve. Here I decided to scalp Delbonis’ serve as there was enough value in it and a back-to-back break seemed unlikely. The game wen’t into the distance though, but Federico grabbed it and I immediately hedged for a second time for a $32 profit. As I checked back later Granollers won the match, pretty easy, 6-2 7-5.

This is a great example on how you can profit from a tennis market even if the player that you consider favorite for winning, under performs and loses the match. This is an important difference between tennis trading and tennis betting.
